Why Your Next Lead Magnet Should Be a Quiz

Are you trying to strategize ways to grow your email list? It's no secret that we're big advocates of email marketing. But getting people to subscribe to your newsletters? That can be quite a bit harder. We don't just hand over our email address for no reason, so it's understandable that we need to provide something valuable to our target audience in exchange for access to their inbox.

A quiz lead magnet may be just the thing you're looking for! A quiz is a series of questions you can ask your audience to provide them with the desired result – typically the answer to a question they're wondering. For example, one of the most common uses of an online quiz is a personality quiz. Maybe you're thinking of Buzzfeed quizzes, and that's exactly what we're talking about, but in a more practical sense. We're not interested in what percent strawberry vs lemon you are instead of which of your products is the best fit for your quiz taker.

In exchange for your participant's email address, they'll receive their quiz results, which means they're now subscribed to your email list and are one step closer to investing in your products! There are countless more reasons why a quiz should be your next lead magnet, but let's break down three reasons why this is a great idea and how you can get started! We’re going to cover…

  • Quizzes are much more interactive than other freebies

  • They help you learn more about your target audience

  • They’re great for grabbing and holding attention

  • And then we’re going to talk about how you can build a quiz lead magnet!

#1 It's much more interactive than other freebies

Have you ever downloaded a freebie that looked good on the outside, but was so out-of-touch and text-heavy that you never worked your way through it and now it's collecting digital dust in some dark corner of your inbox? We probably all know that feeling, but it can be easily remedied with a freebie that involves the reader!

This is the first reason why a quiz is such an effective lead magnet. You're holding the attention of your target audience for longer with all the moving pieces. Quizzes are usually short enough that your quiz taker will happily read the question and all the answers, then select the one that fits them the best.

This process is much more interactive than scrolling through a PDF, watching a video, or reading an ebook. While all these options are effective lead magnets, they are much more stagnant.

#2 It allows you to learn even more about your target audience

The more you know about your potential customers, the better equipped you are to educate them, build relationships, and create products that are going to interest them! Different types of people are going to be taking your quiz, which means your results should cater to people in different stages of their life, with different goals, or just with varying personalities. The more you know about your audience, the more specific you can get in the emails you send them. This means that you can strategically segment your audience based on their quiz results. Quizzes can help you answer questions you may have about your audience, such as:

  • What are your ideal customers currently looking for?

  • Which product resonates with your audience based on their results?

  • Where your audience is at in terms of the customer journey?

When you do this, you can give more personalized recommendations of which planner they should choose. It's key to make the purchasing process effortless for potential customers, otherwise, they're just going to leave your website before spending any money because it's too confusing. When you can give website visitors personalized suggestions and put them next to a "buy now" button, their decision-making process just got a lot easier, making it easier for you to make a sale!

#3 It captures the attention long enough for users to take action

Oftentimes, freebies are too long-winded. Your audience ends up getting distracted before they have time to make it to the end. Since quizzes are interactive and constantly present new information, your audience won't tire out so fast! This way, you have higher chances of them completing the CTA you include at the end of your quiz. They'll read through all the information you give them, which helps build like, know, and trust – all meaning that the chances of them converting into a lead faster are much higher!

Chances are, you've moved away from Etsy and are building your own website because you want to interact with your target audience more and give them a chance to learn more about your brand and not just shop your products.

If you want to connect with your website visitors on a deeper level, a lead magnet quiz is a perfect opportunity to do so. Not only does it give both you and them a chance to learn more about each other, but it puts them right on your email list, where you'll share lots of educational content that will familiarize subscribers with your brand and help them see why it would be a good idea to invest in your products!

Bonus: how to build a quiz lead magnet for your business

There are many quiz tools that you can use to set up your new lead magnet. Each one has various options, so you can explore each on your own and decide which is best for you. Some have the option to add images to your quiz questions, increased automations, some are more technical than others, a few are so popular that they integrate with all kinds of business tools, and some offer more tools than just quiz building so you can really get to know your audience. You can also organize and understand all the data you’ll receive from your audience in a way that makes sense.

There are three different tools we suggest you explore as you start creating your new lead magnet:

  • Bucket.io - this is the first platform we used with our first quiz. Like any new platform, there is a learning curve but their videos made it easy to set up your quiz in just a few days.

  • Interact quizzes - this is the most popular quiz platform. It has everything you need including great direct integration with email marketing platforms - which saves time skipping Zapier to connect 2-3 websites and tagging options to separate your audience based on their results.

  • ConvertBox - this is what we currently use to host our quizzes. This website is not necessarily for quizzes like those other two platforms. This is mainly for lead magnets, forms, and countdown timers across multiple platforms. We love it because it's a one-time investment instead of a monthly subscription or annual payment and there's no limit to how many of their tools you can use!

What do you need to set up your quiz lead magnet for your digital planner business?

  • Quiz questions - this is the most important part! Questions allow you to learn more about your audience and help them to make their own decisions throughout the quiz. We recommend using 5-7 questions — not too short and not too long!

  • Quiz outcomes & product bundles - set up various outcomes for your quiz. You don’t want everyone to get the same result! Each of your outcomes should also be attached to one of your products that helps solve the main problem identified in the quiz. Based on the products in your shop, we recommend setting up 3-8 outcomes.

  • Sales pages - your audience knows what their outcome is and they’ve been presented with the product that can help them, so now what? A sales page helps to convince them of why they need this product, how it’s going to help them, and what’s included in their purchase. Each outcome and product should have its own sales page.

  • Emails - don’t just stop sending emails once you’ve delivered the quiz results! Keep nurturing your audience with educational content that helps you to build a relationship on trust. We recommend having 5-8 emails in your welcome sequence to introduce people to your business and get them used to seeing your emails in their inbox.

Final thoughts

Now you can sit back and watch your email list grow with connected, interested subscribers who are likely to purchase your products! Your email marketing efforts don’t just have to stop here, there are so many more options to explore to grow your community!
